The Challenge:

The quality control of hydraulic systems used to be a bottleneck at Frits Schur Energy.

The Solution:

FSE contacted the Danish company CIM Industrial Systems to solve the task. CIM has developed their own software for test solutions based upon LabView from National Instruments.

Automatic test removes bottleneck

The quality control of hydraulic systems used to be a bottleneck at Frits Schur Energy; however, the situation has now been improved through advanced Teststan software developed in cooperation with CIM Industrial Systems.

Fritz Schur Energy is a supplier of hydraulic systems for the large wind turbine companies. It is a market where today’s orders are expected to have been delivered yesterday, and where the demands on quality and documentation are extremely tough:

"Since going global, we count major clients from the US and China in our customer base. They demand fast and very flexible production," says Technical Transfer Manager Claus Tellefsen of Fritz Schur Energy, FSE.

"An assignment will typically consist of making a prototype, getting it accepted and producing it for delivery today," says Claus Tellefsen with a smile.

The production has to be ultra flexible, and that is why there is a permanent staff and the possibility of getting extra hands in the form of temps, if needed.

Test as a competitive parameter

The quality control has proven to be a bottleneck in the production. All the hydraulic systems are tested individually, and test reports are forwarded to the client. FSE used to have a test bench for every product but all the changes in the production called for a more flexible test solution.

"We based our systems on our clients’ purchasing criteria. They wanted 100% traceability, uniform tests and a high degree of documentation," says Claus Tellefsen.

The demands for the supplier of the test bench were defined, and we were faced with some tough challenges:

"The solutions had to be future proof and be able to communicate with our ERP-system. We wanted a very flexible solution with a minimum of operator interference and without readjustment during product change. On top of that we wanted easy management which was easy to program with central troubleshooting, a unique interface and the ability to send an e-mail when a test had been completed," says, test engineer at FSE, Henrik Cairns Sigersted.

FSE had some physical demands for the test bench as well:

"It had to be movable. It should take no more than a couple of hours to set up, and it should fit into a container. We are a global company, and we have to be able to move our test bench to the production places around the world," says Claus Tellefsen.
